Pandora’s Battery and Magic Memory Stick Guide

|

A lot of people are having trouble installing custom firmware on their new PSPs (which have the offical firmware pre-installed), many guides require a Pandora Battery – some people understandably do not want to open up their Battery to modify it (understandably) for those people perhaps the only option left is to go buy one from somewhere, but for the brave and tech savvy I present you my guide which will cover everything from creating a Pandora Battery to Magic Memory Stick.

DISCLAIMER : Anything you implement beyond this point, you are doing this at your own risk. This procedure like all hombrew procedure has a small chance that it may brick your PSP. By following the following instructions, you agree to the fact that If your PSP is bricked by any chance, I will not be held responsible.

OK formailities out of the way, there are 2 parts to this guide.

Part 1 : Create both the Pandora Battery and Despertar del Cementerio Magic Memory Stick using CFW already installed on PSP.

Part 2 : Buy a Pandora Battery and make the Despertar del Cementerio Magic Memory Stick using your PC.

Creating a Pandora Battery using a PSP with CFW pre-installed

Items that you will require :

  • A genuine PSP battery (cheap fakes do not work)
  • A custom firmware installed PHAT PSP or 1st gen (TA-085) slim PSP.
  • A Pandora Battery creator tool

NOTE slim PSP : You need to check whether your PSP version is 1st Generation or 2nd Generation, execute this app on the PSP and check the PSP motherboard model.

The run-down
Model TA-085 : First generation slim PSP. Can make a Pandora’s Battery.
Model TA-085v2 : Second generation slim PSP. CANNOT make a Pandora’s Battery.
Any versions beyond TA-085v2 will not be able to make Pandora Battery either.

Creating Pandora Battery :

  1. Follow the install instructions provided by the OSBT Battery Creator
  2. Launch the program from the GAME menu on your PSP
  3. Remember, the application works for custom firmware version 3.xx and 4.xx, It will not work on 1.5 Kernal any more, so remember to place the contents on the GAME folder and not the GAME150 folder

Select the option to backup the EEPROM, this stage is very important in case something goes wrong and you need to restore the battery. I’ve bricked one of my batteries permanently because I did not create a backup.

Also creating a Pandora Battery and reveting it back to a Regular battery usually nullifies the Batteries original, unique serial number. If you restore a backup EEPROM you will also restore your unique serial number so it’s worth doing.

The application should quit after creating backup, you’re set to convert it into Pandora Battery, so launch the application back up again.

Once done, Congratulations. You are the proud owner of a Pandora Battery!

NOTE : If you turn the  PSP off the PSP, you will not be able to turn it back on as you normally would, this is because the Battery is used to ‘launch’ the PSP. One way around this is to remove the battery altogther, and plug in the PSP’s mains, that should boot up the PSP normally without any problems.

Creating the Despertar del Cementerio Magic Memory Stick using a CFW installed PSP

Items that you will need:

  • A Memory Stick PRO Duo. with minimum capacity of 256MB.
  • Any M33 or Dark Alex firmware PSP.
  • M33’s Despertar del Cementerio installer : Here.
  • Sony Official 3.40 Firmware Here.
  • Sony Official 3.80 Firmware Here.
  • Sony Official 1.50 Firmware Here.
  • Time Machine IPL loader : Here.

Creating the Magic Memory Stick :
Alright first step is to rename the update firmwares Rename each eboot.pbp to it’s version number, 3.40 eboot should be named 340.PBP, 380.PBP, 150.PBP etc Move the 3 .pbp files on to the root of the Memory Stick

Extract the contents of the despertar_cementerio4.rar archive and move the folder despertar_cementerio to the Memory Stick folder :/PSP/GAME .

Now Plug unplug the USB, and launch the DC4 installer from the GAME menu from the PSP, follow the instructions and it should produce a bunch of files, a couple of folders should be generated you should notice kd folder, registry folder and msipl.bin file on the root.

Now extract the timemachine_0.1.rar files onto the desktop. And cut and paste the TIMEMACHINE folder to MemoryStick:/PSP/GAME folder on your PSP.

Now Run the Time Machine from the PSP’s GAME folder and install IPLloader to MS. Once it’s done, select Convert pandora IPL to Time Machine format. Then, quit the app. This should place the folder TM in your Memory Stick.

Congrats! Now you have a Despertar del Cementerio Magic Memory Stick in your hands.

Installing CFW

Turn off PSP completely. And Insert the DC4 Magic Memory Stick

Now hold UP on the D-Pad and insert the Pandora’s Battery. Keep holding the UP button until the PSP boots into the Pandora menu.

Now press X to install 3.80 M33-5.

Done!

Note on PSN games :

quote Dark_AleX

Note: If you are gonna use the memory stick to restore a psp other than the one that created it,
check if the file /registry/act.dat exists in the ms. If it exists, remove it, otherwise the restored psp may not be able
to buy psn games until the user doesn’t delete from flash2 the act.dat of the other psp. (act.dat files are unique for each psp).

Note that act.dat will be restored to the moment of the MS creation.
If you have bought other PSN game later, the act.dat file may have changed and if you restore the old one, you may loose the latest bought game.
Backup flash2:/act.dat each time after you buy something from the PSN!

How to Downgrade PSP – Free PSP Downgrading Guide

|

Introduction to Downgrading

Firstly, we’d like to clarify something for you, if you’re here because you heard someone say that if you ‘downgrade’ your PSP, you can unlock it to run homebrew games on it. Well you’re partly correct, downgrading will aloow you to do that. However, the techniques to playing homebrew have changed drastically over the years, and ‘downgrading’ is no longer the case any more.

Here’s what used to happen, you’d buy a PSP with version 2.8 firmware (for arguments sake), and you had to ‘downgrade’ your PSP to version 1.5, then you had to go find a dark alex custom firmware and install 3.40 OE-A firmware on your 1.5 PSP; in order to play homebrew games on it.

Well firstly you no longer need to downgrade 2.8 PSP to 1.5, you can now skip that step and go from 2.8 PSP to a 3.40 OE-A software PSP. Thanks to a wonderful device called a Pandora Battery.

Precaution to Downgrading

Firstly, downgrading your PSP to pirate software is illegal and shunned upon, and sites do get shut down for pirating software out to people, so be warned! Secondly, there are several methods of downgrading your PSP, none of which are authorised by Sony, and if you were to damage your PSP whilst performing a downgrade neither the webmaster nor Sony will be there for your support, as you are performing all actions on your own accord.

Downgrading using a Magic Memory Stick

We’ll be uploading our own all-inclusive downgrading guides very soon. Convential methods of downgrading involved an HEN exploit which allowed users to find a hole in the system, to install custom software through. Nowadays there is no need for this, and what you simply need is the access to the right files and a way to create a pandora battery or buy one from somewhere. All of this will be detailed.

Downgrading is a good way to play homebrew games on your PSP, and to play your backed up games that you legally own, on your PSP. We cannot emphanise this point any more! Sony originally restricted a lot of functionality on the PSP – which was explored by the homebrew community and thus Sony followed suit afterwards, such as the PSP 333Mhz clock speed, custom themes, radio player etc which was originally invented by the open source community.

There are numerous guides avilable on the internet, you need to make sure you follow the instructions religiously, as Sony do not support downgrading, you have no saftey net if things go wrong, we will list our own tried and tested methods using a magic memory stick and pandora battery. If you were to incorrectly downgrade you could mess up your PSP and make it a brick. The good news is that on a last resort you can buy kits from the internet that enable you to restore your PSP fully.
